Venture Crew: High School

The St. Gabriel Venturing Crew is a youth-led program for high school students (grades 9 - 12) that offers a chance for leadership and service (including valuable “service hours”) in a social setting.  Would you like to try snow skiing or snowboarding?  Paddling a kayak?  Hiking in the mountains?  Are you looking for service hours with friends?  If you’re looking for fun, excitement and service, our High School Venturing Crew is the group for you!

Recent events have included a bowling party, bike riding on the Virginia Creeper Trail, climbing at Inner Peaks, kayaks on Lake Wylie, and a day hike and picnic at Crowders Mountain.  We do service projects such as the recent campout for homelessness awareness, park clean-up, participation in the Mt. Island Lake Sweep, and helping with babysitting during the Parish Volunteer Reception.

New members are always welcome.

Kayaking Catawba River at Landsford Canal

Monday, May 29

We will paddle in the calm waters upstream of historic Landsford Canal followed by a walking tour of the famous Spider Lilies which bloom wild in the shallow rapids during May.  Kayaks/canoes to be provided by Catawba River Expeditions.  Cost is $45 per person ($40 kayak rental and $5 park entrance).  Tandem kayak or canoe is $50 ($25 per person) but most will want to use a single person kayak.  Response needed by May 12.

Mt. Rogers Backpacking Trip

June 10-11

We will leave Saturday morning and travel to Grayson Highlands State Park near Mouth of Wilson, VA  (on the border with NC).  Hike with backpacks and gear for overnight camp on a ridge near Mt. Rogers (the highest peak in Virginia).  The hike is 3 miles up a rocky trail – this will be a good workout but most youth in reasonable condition can do this if pack weight is kept low.  The Crew has several backpacks, tents, and other gear that can be loaned but we need to know what people have.  A planning meeting will be scheduled for May.  Please respond with you and let us know if you plan to participate (final count can come later, but we need to begin planning).
